CHILD RECOVERS AFTER RARE SURGERY AT Ankura Hospital

Persistent Urine Dribbling in a 5-Year-Old Girl Finally Cured at Ankura Hospital, Vijayawada

Vijayawada April 17 2025 - After four years of continuous urine dribbling and misdiagnoses, a five-year-old girl has finally found relief at Ankura Hospital, Vijayawada. Her case highlights the expertise of Ankura Hospital team in diagnosing rare conditions.

The child and her family struggled with the emotional and physical toll of persistent urinary leakage in the child. Despite visiting multiple hospitals and undergoing various treatments, the underlying problem remained unidentified. She was misdiagnosed as having a "neurogenic bladder," a condition in which the nerves controlling the bladder do not function properly. Based on this assumption, she received treatments that failed to improve her condition.

When she was brought to Ankura Hospital, a careful clinical evaluation revealed a crucial detail—urine was seen leaking from the vaginal area. This observation pointed towards a rare condition: an ectopic ureter.

Subsequent imaging tests, including an ultrasound and MRI urogram, confirmed the presence of a duplex kidney system on the left side, meaning the kidney had two separate drainage systems. These tests revealed that the upper ureter was abnormally draining into the vagina instead of the bladder. The diagnosis was confirmed, and the child underwent laparoscopic uretero-ureterostomy, a minimally invasive surgery where the abnormal ureter was redirected to join the normal drainage system.

The child is now finally free from years of discomfort and embarrassment that overshadowed her early childhood. This successful outcome was made possible by the collaborative efforts of Ankura Hospital team including Dr. Varunkumar M, Pediatric Surgeon and Pediatric Urologist; Dr. Nagaraj, Pediatric Anaesthetist; Dr. Murali Krishna B, Pediatric Nephrologist; and Dr. VVS Chandrasekharam, Pediatric Surgeon & Urologist, who guided the team as a mentor.

“This case highlights the expertise of Ankura Hospital team in accurate clinical examination, combined with targeted investigations, that lead to an accurate diagnosis and a definitive cure,” says Dr. Vijay Kumar, Medical Director of Ankura Hospital, Vijayawada. “In children with continuous urine dribbling, especially in girls, ectopic ureters should always be considered and our team plays a vital role in resolving such complex but treatable conditions.”

Supported by a multidisciplinary team and advanced medical infrastructure, Ankura Hospital offers a wide range of pediatric and women's health services and prioritizes safe, minimally invasive, and effective treatment. The hospital remains committed to delivering specialized and compassionate care, ensuring every child and woman receives an accurate diagnosis and the best possible outcome.

The family was informed that although the time commitment involved in transfusions may seem limited—approximately four hours once a month—the implications of the disease are far-reaching. Terms such as genetic disorder , lifelong transfusions , and iron chelation therapy were introduced, leaving the parents overwhelmed.       Guillain-Barre Syndrome: Mechanisms, Risk Factors, and Comprehensive Management                             By Dr.  Keerthi Kundana Consultant Pediatric Neurologist, Ankura Hospital for Women and Children Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare condition that causes sudden muscle weakness affecting most of the body. What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome? Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), also known as acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP), is a neurological disorder where the body's immune system responds abnormally and attacks peripheral nervous system—the network of nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. As a result, the nerves cannot transmit signals effectively and the muscles begin to lose their ability to respond to the brain's commands, which causes weakness and abnormal or absent reflexes. The condition can arise suddenly and requires immediate hospit...
