Ankura Hospital brings new hope for 29 year old woman suffering from a complex gynecological ailment

Dr Pujita Myneni, Senior Obstetrician, Gynecologist, and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Ankura Hospital

Ankura Hospital for Women & Children, a prominent healthcare institution known for its specialised services in women and child health, has achieved a remarkable feat by successfully performing a challenging gynaecological surgery on a 29-year-old woman who was suffering from abdominal distention- a tight and swollen abdomen. An open Myomectomy was performed on the patient by the skilled doctors at Ankura Hospital, thereby curing the patient of the discomfort and preserving her fertility.

When the patient was brought to Ankura Hospital, she exhibited abdominal distention. Recognizing the need for urgency, she was taken to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, where a thorough clinical examination and ultrasound were performed by Dr Pujita Myneni, Senior Obstetrician, Gynecologist, and Laparoscopic Surgeon, and her team. Following thorough clinical examination and ultrasound, the investigations led to the diagnosis of large fibroids in her uterus. Though fibroids are very common benign tumours of the uterus, Fibroids larger than 10 cm are called large fibroids, and they are rare. Since the patient was diagnosed with huge fibroids that measured, 37 x 33 cm and weighed 7.115kgs, her ailment demanded immediate attention and cure. An open Myomectomy was planned to remove the fibroids. Unlike Hysterectomy, in Myomectomy, only the fibroid portion is removed while preserving the uterus.

Speaking about the challenging surgery, Dr Pujita Myneni, Senior Obstetrician, Gynecologist, and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Ankura Hospital said, “The patient presented with abdominal distention. Further investigations revealed that she had a large fibroid, which required immediate care. Hysterectomy is normally recommended for patients with such large fibroids. However, keeping in mind the age of the patient, we preferred to proceed with Myomectomy, which would remove only the portion with fibroids. In such cases of large fibroids, maintaining haemodynamic stability is also a challenge due to the increased risk of severe haemorrhage during and after surgery. We were successful with the procedure and were able to preserve the uterus. Now the patient is not only fine, but pregnancies are possible in future. This is a boon for young women like her.”

Adding to this, Dr. T. V. Vijay Kumar, Medical Director, Ankura Hospital, Vijayawada said,” At Ankura Hospital, it is our mission to save lives and ensure the well-being of our patients. We have a team of experienced doctors trained in using state-of-the-art facilities to handle unique challenges. This case is a testament to the exceptional level of care and expertise provided at Ankura Hospital, Vijayawada. The highly skilled team of doctors performed the challenging procedure of Myomectomy on the patient, to remove the fibroid of this size while navigating the risk of injury to the adjacent structures. With meticulous planning, skillful intervention, and world-class infrastructure at Ankura Hospital, an open myomectomy was successfully performed in this case. The woman was kept under observation postoperatively and was happily discharged with no complications. Stories like this, bring renewed hope to young women, reassuring that with advanced care, even the most challenging conditions can be overcome.”

Ankura Hospital advises that women with unusual symptoms like heavy menstrual bleeding, painful periods, bleeding in between periods, pelvic pain, pain in the lower back, or abdominal distention, as in this case, may have fibroids and require attention. Apart from these, women should consult a gynecologist at the earliest in case they notice any other unusual symptoms. An early diagnosis and treatment ensures an effective cure and prevents complications.

The Silent Struggle and Strength Behind Thalassemia’s Smallest Warriors" by Dr.Nadipalli Sravani, Consultant Oncologist and Haematologist, Ankura Hospital For Women and Children A routine evening took a serious turn for a young couple in their 20s when their three-month-old baby was noticed to have mild abdominal distension and persistent crying—initially assumed to be a case of infantile colic. However, upon further evaluation, the child was diagnosed with Thalassemia Major , a severe inherited blood disorder that requires lifelong monthly blood transfusions to sustain life. The family was informed that although the time commitment involved in transfusions may seem limited—approximately four hours once a month—the implications of the disease are far-reaching. Terms such as genetic disorder , lifelong transfusions , and iron chelation therapy were introduced, leaving the parents overwhelmed. When the father inquired about a permanent solution, bone marrow transplantation w...
